Arizona window tint law, in plain English
How dark you can legally go on each window in Arizona. A summary of A.R.S. § 28-959.01, last reviewed 2026-11-05.
| Window | Rule |
|---|---|
| Front side windows | Must let in more than 33% of light (VLT), with a 3% tolerance. Reflectance no more than 35%. |
| Back side windows | Any darkness, if the vehicle has outside mirrors on both sides. |
| Rear window | Any darkness, if the vehicle has outside mirrors on both sides. |
| Windshield | Non-reflective tint only above the manufacturer's AS-1 line. |
| Colors | Red and amber tint are not allowed. |
What "VLT" means
Visible light transmission is the share of light that gets through the glass and film together. A "35%" film on factory glass that is already slightly tinted can measure lower than 35%, so ask your shop to meter the finished window.
Before you book
- Ask which film line they use (carbon or ceramic) and what the warranty covers.
- Ask for the measured VLT on the front side windows after install.
- Keep the film receipt in the car.
This is a plain-language summary, not legal advice. Laws change. Read the current statute at azleg.gov (A.R.S. 28-959.01) before relying on it.
